Hi there! I’m Minako from Japan. It is my first time to use this website.
I’m excited to practice TOEFL Speaking here. Please kindly advise my speaking.
    Thank you so much.

    (My answer)
Professor explained about three animals in the lecture.
First one is camel. Camel need to live in hot desert and they have long eyelush to avoid sand. They also have fat to keep their energy.
Second animal is gellafe. they have a long neck and it helps them to eat leaves on the trees. Also they can camoflage with trees, so they can protect themselves from the other animals.
Last animal is penguin. They have thick skin and it can help them to keep high body temperature. Their black skin also keep them from the heat from the sun. They also have an ability of powerful swim to keep their lives.
Those are the three animal’s body features to survive in the paticular environment.

Hi @Minako, welcome to the TOEFL-Speaking Community!
Your answer is one of the best responses we’ve ever had!

      The Score: 4/4

The response fulfills the demands of the task. It is highly intelligible and well developed. It exhibits sustained, coherent discourse.

      Speech is clear, and well-paced.

The response includes minor errors which do not affect overall intelligibility:

      1. Pronunciation corrections:
animal: /ˈæn ə məl/ (Pay attention to the first letter!)
Please click here to listen to the pronunciation.

      2. “Their black skin also keep them warm by absorbing heat from the sun.” would be better.

      3. You repeat the word “also” so much. You may want to check “Conjunctions & Conjunctive Adverbs” to learn other words used to add supportive ideas.

      4. Some spelling corrections (Although it’s not important in Speaking section, it is important in the writing section):

not “eyelush“, but “eyelash“, even “eyelashes
      not “gellafe“, but “giraffe
      not “camoflage“, but “camouflage
      not “paticular“, but “particular

The professor explains that different animals have different body structures that help them survive in their environment. He talks about the adaptations of the camel, the giraffe, and the penguin.
Camels live in the hot desert, they possess a double layer of long eyelashes that help them keep the sand out of their eyes. They have humps full of fat that they can metabolize when they need energy.
Giraffes live in the savannah where they are surrounded by trees, they have long necks, that help them eat the top leaves. Their color helps them to camouflage with the trees.
The penguin live in areas of low temperature, to withstand that environment they have a thick skin, and the dark color of their back absorb heat from the sun.

    Thanks for your comments.

      Hi @Yaua,

      The Score: 3/4

The response addresses the task appropriately, however it exhibits some incompleteness.

You understand the lecture. Problems are time allocation and pacing.

The response time for Question Type 6 is 60 seconds.

For example in this specific question, there are 3 animals that you need to mention.

So, you can use the following time allocation plan.

      Introduction: 10 seconds (1-10)
      First animal: 15 seconds (10-25)
      Second animal: 15 seconds (25-40)
      Third animal: 15 seconds (40-55)
      Conclusion: 5 seconds (55-60)

Regarding difficulties with pacing, you need to take notes while listening and use preparation time (20 seconds) effectively.

      Hi @Anna,

      Considering your test date, the best way to practice for TOEFL Speaking Section is to answer the questions as if you were in real test;
      – Listening to the lecture only once
      – Limiting your time to prepare
      – Recording your response once
      And you nailed it 🙂

      The Score: 4/4

In my opinion, integrated speaking questions are easier than independent ones. Because, you don’t need to think what you will talk about. But, if you have difficulties to understand listening passages, it might cause problems. As far as I understand from your response, you can understand what you listen to. So, you don’t need to worry.

Additionally, the most important strategy for integrated speaking questions is to take effective notes. You need to identify key points while listening and you should take notes. During preparation, you need to organize your notes and plan how to approach the question. Again you did it very well.

The response fulfills the demands of the task.

Speech is clear, fluid and sustained. Pronunciation is very good. Pace varies at times as the speaker attempts to recall information. Overall intelligibility remains high.

The response demonstrates good control of basic and complex grammatical structures that allow for coherent, efficient expressions of relevant ideas. Though minor errors and imprecise use are noticeable, they do not require listener effort.

The response presents a clear progression of ideas and conveys the relevant information required by the task. It includes appropriate detail, though it has minor omissions.

Lastly, you use the response time effectively which is also important.

You are giving sufficient details. However, one thing that I notice is that you almost speak in a monologue fashion – very quick with hardly any intonations. Some of details in this audio were a little misplaced … dark and thick skin of penguin was not that big a factor as the solid bones that will allow it remain underwater when it goes hunting. Good but you can do better.

I think you did okay … just that you did not end. There were a few grammatical errors and it also appeared that you were trying to fake an accent. I think being natural would help you more.
